GONG - The Vancouver Gamelan Festival

Gong! The Gamelan Festival, April 15-17 at SFU Woodward's (corner of Cambie and Cordova). A celebration of Indonesian music, dance, theatre and food. FREE WORKSHOPS Pre-register by email caravanworldnews at gmail DOT com or phone 604 781 2133 Friday Discover Gamelan instruments and learn to play a short piece 3:00-4:00pm Javanese Gamelan Music. 4:30-5:30pm Balinese Gamelan Music. Saturday Lecture-demo 5:00-5:45pm Shadow-puppet theatre (Wayang) and Sundanese music. Sunday Interactive introductory workshops 1:00-2:30pm: Balinese Dance. 1:00pm-2:00pm: Sundanese (West Java) Gamelan Music. 2:00pm: Indonesian Food Tasting Table SHOWS Friday April 15, 7:30pm: BALINESE MUSIC & DANCE, with Gamelan Gita Asmara (led by I Wayan Sudirana, Putu Widiantini and Michael Tenzer). The ensemble will have special guest Balinese dancers & musicians, renowned as among the best of Bali. The combined effect of the music, dance, instruments and costumes is dazzling. Saturday April 16, 7:30pm: JAVANESE SHADOW THEATRE, with live music by Gamelan Madu Sari and special guest puppet-master Matthew Cohen performing "Anoman the Envoy". Opening the evening is Toronto's Sunda Duo. Sunday April 17, 3:00pm: CONTEMPORARY GAMELAN MUSIC: Gamelan Madu Sari and Gamelan Si Pawit (led by Jon Siddall) present a program of new music for Javanese and Sundanese gamelan. TICKETS $12 advance each concert ($15 at the door), or $30 Festival Pass for 3 Concerts. Free for children 12 and under. An Indonesian food caterer will be on site 1 hour before each show.
